Congressmen improve the fluidity of Universal Postal Union acts
The 27th congress of the Universal Postal Union is continuing in Abidjan, where it opened on 9 August 2021.
On Thursday 19 August 2021, the congressmen discussed issues related to the fluidity of the union’s acts with the aim of improving it.
Delegations such as that of the United States of America proposed reducing the quorum for attendance at meetings to 50% instead of the usual 2/3, but its amendment was rejected “so that the union remains as representative as possible”, stressed Belgian delegate Jack Hamande.
The integration of new members was also discussed, but is still subject to the usual diplomatic procedures, since all countries must agree, as is the case at the UN.
On the other hand, the procedure for leaving the UPU is a little simpler, as the applicant only needs to write to the UPU Director General, whose reply is subject to a deadline.
