Côte d’Ivoire is located in the heart of West Africa. Spread over 322,462 km2, this country that is also called “the economic engine of West Africa” is bordered to the north by Mali and Burkina Faso, to the west by Liberia and Guinea, to the east by Ghana and the south by the Atlantic Ocean.


Located in the northern hemisphere, between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator, Côte d’Ivoire is naturally endowed with several geographical and climatic assets.


Having become independent in 1960, Côte d’Ivoire quickly became one of the most powerful countries in West Africa. With its charming borders, it is one of the most welcoming and exciting countries to visit on the African continent.


Characterized by its legendary hospitality, Côte d’Ivoire is also a land of economic investment. Its agriculture, port and road infrastructures give to the country a strategic position in West Africa. Abidjan, its economic capital, is its main urban center with more than 4,707,404 million inhabitants, according to the latest 2014 census.

Since 2011, thanks to a policy focused on the development of multilateral cooperation, Côte d’Ivoire has quickly regained its place in the community of nations with an average economic growth rate of 8%.


The world’s leading cocoa producer, the major African dessert banana producer and the world’s first cashew nut producer, Côte d’Ivoire is based on strong and structured agriculture. The tertiary sector is not left out. With a constantly developing infrastructure network, Côte d’Ivoire has embarked on several projects aimed at making a significant contribution to improving the living conditions of its fellow citizens: construction of universities, hospitals, first-rate hotel accommodation, an urban metro project, reinforced lagoon transport, an Olympic stadium, etc. All of these projects significantly contribute to boosting and consolidating economic activity in Côte d’Ivoire.


Throughout the decade 2010-2020, Côte d’Ivoire Has proudly repositioned itself on the international scene with the holding of major events on a continental and global scale in its economic capital. Worthy of mention are the following events :

  • The World Cocoa Conference held in Abidjan in 2012
  • The Africa CEO Forum in 2013
  • The African Union/European Union Summit in 2017
  • The 8th Jeux de la francophonie in 2017


In December 2018, Côte d’Ivoire chaired the United Nations Security Council in New York, where the country has been a permanent member since 1 January 2018 for two years.


The choice of Côte d’Ivoire to host the 27th Congress of the Universal Postal Union, therefore, reflects all the efforts undertaken by the Government to make Côte d’Ivoire a trustworthy country when it comes to world-class events.


The country intends to give everything to meet the challenge of making this congress a historic success for all of Africa. Through the chosen slogan, it is indeed Africa that invites you and it is Côte d’Ivoire that has the honor of welcoming you. For the first time in world postal history, sub-Saharan Africa will host this event.


Thus, Africa, this fascinating continent, with a thousand contrasts, and ten thousand wonders, infinite opportunities and particularly our country, Côte d’Ivoire, known for its human warmth, culture, history, values, natural and tourist sites, will proudly welcome more than 2000 postal delegates to Abidjan from August 10 to 28, 2020.

Sub-equatorial climate characterized by low temperatures (from 25°C to 30°C), high humidity (from 80 to 90%) and abundant rainfall during the rainy season. The main rainy season is from May to July, with wet and relatively rainy weather from August to October. The long dry and hot season lasts from December to April.
